This is an applet featuring othello. Reversi was invented in England at the end of the 19th century. Two Englishmen pretended to be inventors of the game - John W. Mollet and Lewis Waterman. Mr. Waterman introduced Reversi in 1888 and it was played on the square 8x8 board. Mr. Mollet, in his turn, claimed that Reversi was just an adaption of his game 'Annexation' that he had invented in 1870. This conflict was never solved but the game became very popular in the late 19th century. In 1971 the Japanese Goro Hasegawa invented the game of Othello, a slight variation of Reversi. Othello differs from Reversi in the following respects. In Reversi, the game begins with an empty board and in first two turns the players fill the central four squares. In Othello it's already done for you and the first four disks are arranged in criss-cross fashion. Another difference is that each player in Reversi has only 32 disks and isn' t allowed to borrow disks from the opponent. If he has used up all his disks, the opponent plays all the last moves. The reinvention revived the popularity of the game. Othello spread throughout the world and was marketed with great success.
